Thanasi Kokkinakis made his return to the tennis courts at the Australian Open 2021 after dealing with injuries for almost over two years. Kokkinakis reached the main draw of the Miami Open after winning two qualifying round matches. In the first round of the main draw, the Australian got the better off the 17-year old teenager, Shintaro Mochizuki in straight sets. He has a long history with the Miami Open, given that he earned the biggest victory of his career at this tournament in 2018, when he defeated Roger Federer.

Marton Fucsovics received a bye in the first round by virtue of being the 29th seed. The Hungarian last played at the Dubai Open 2021 where he was defeated by Andrey Rublev in straight sets.
