Daniil Medvedev was having a horrid time on tour before the Vienna Open which included first round exits at the Hamburg Open and the French Open. He lost in the 2nd round of the Petersburg Open where he was the defending champion. He got back to winning ways to some extent at the Vienna Open as he reached the quarterfinals before finally losing to Kevin Anderson in straight sets. Medvedev will be desperate to build on the momentum from the Vienna Open and have a better run in Paris.

Kevin Anderson has struggled with injuries which has kept him off the top for quite a while. He had a good run at the French Open but lost to Andrey Rublev in the third round. The South African had a better than expected run at the Vienna Open where he reached the semifinals. In the semifinals, Anderson had to grant a walkover to Andrey Rublev in the 2nd set, owing to an injury.

He came back stronger and recovered from any injury issues with a good start against his 1st round opponent, Laslo Djere at the Paris Masters. Djere was down 5-2 in the first set, when he had to hand a walkover to the South African.
