Daniil Medvedev was in for a challenge against the South African. Medvedev has not been at the top of his game since the US Open semi finals. In the round of 32 against Anderson, it was 6-6 in the opening set. However, trailing in the seven point tie-break, Anderson approached the chair umpire to call it quits.

Earlier, the South African was in the semi-finals after a phenomenal tour at Vienna. But he conceded against Russian, Andrey Rublev after losing the opening set, 6-4 and trailing 1-4 in the second. The 6 ATP title winner, Anderson has seen a downhill after reaching his career-best in 2018.

It is the eight career withdrawal from a match by Anderson. However, it is the third occasion when, amidst a match, Anderson had to quit. Looking at his physical conditions, Anderson could end his season already after two back-to-back withdrawal amidst the match. It must be disappointing for the 2018 World No. 5 to struggle to showcase his best game.
