Shapovalov started the season well, reaching the Quarter Finals of the US Open, and the Semi Finals of the Italian Open and the St. Petersburg Open. After that though he experienced a slide in form. In the Australian Open 2021, he reached the third round of the event. Seeded fourth at this year’s Qatar Open, he had a first round bye.

Goffin fresh off a trophy victory at the Montpellier Open, was defeated 6-1 5-7 7-6 by Fritz.
