Dominic Thiem has had a mediocre 2021 season by his standards. He couldn’t carry Team Austria past the group stages at the ATP Cup and got knocked out in the 4th round of the Australian Open.
The Austrian was affected by a minor injury during that week, and as such wasn’t able to produce his best tennis. Thiem has since recovered fully, and has now also been reunited with coach Nicolas Massu.
The Qatar Open is the first tournament for both Thiem and Karatsev since the Australian Open. As for the Russian, he reached the semi-final of the major enroute his dream run.
In the first round in Doha, Karatsev defeated home hope Mubarak Shannan Zayid on Monday, winning 6-4, 6-0.

This second round clash will a treat to the fans. Dominic Thiem, the top seed is clearly the favorite on paper but given his lack of match practice after the injury, he is likely to be tested by Karatsev’s tough game.
Thiem usually is a slow starter and takes time finding his perfect top spin game. Karatsev boasts of a strong offense and is likely to take Thiem to the distance. And given Karatsev’s confidence, it could be anybody’s game at the end.
Prediction: Thiem to win in 3 sets.
