20-time grand slam champion Roger Federer will be back in action after more than a year in the Qatar Open.

The Swiss tennis star had two knee surgeries in 2020 and hasn’t played since the 2020 Australian Open last January, when he lost to Novak Djokovic in the semifinal.

He is seeded second in the tournament and hence received a first round bye. Federer will face Dan Evans in the Round of 16.

Evans kicked off the 2021 season with a surprise win in the Murray River Open. He defeated the likes of Felix Auger Aliassime and Borna Coric enroute his triumph.

In the first round of Qatar Open, the Briton defeated Jeremy Chardy in three sets 6-4,1-6,6-2.

This will be the 4th meeting between the duo. Roger Federer leads the H2H 3-0. They have only met at the majors, in which the Swiss is yet to drop a set. They last met at the 2019 US Open where Federer won 6-2,6-2,6-1.

While on paper, this match should be a cakewalk for Federer, but the Swiss hasn’t competed on tour for over a year. He showed decent movement on court in the practice sessions.

As for Evans, after his Murray River Open triumph, he has looked poor on court. He lost in the first round of the Australian Open and was taken to the distance in the first round in Doha.

Although the Swiss doesn’t have match practice on his side, his class and experience should be more than enough to defeat Evans and kickstart his comeback.

Prediction: Federer to win in straight sets.
