Andrey Rublev progresses into the finals of the Rotterdam Open

Andrey Rublev defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets to progress into the finals of the Rotterdam Open 2021. The Russian defeated Tsitsipas 6-3, 7-6 as he continues his good form on hard-court surface. Rublev will now face the winner of the other semifinal between Borna Coric and Marton Fucsovics on Sunday.

Stefanos Tsitsipas was expected to go all the way and clinch the title in Rotterdam this week after his spectacular run at the Australian Open 2021. This was a golden chance for the Greek star to claim his first title of the season, after Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev were knocked out in the second round.

Tsitsipas outplayed by Andrey Rublev

Andrey Rublev started off in an amazing fashion as he outplayed Tsitsipas in the first set. The Russian broke the second seed two times in the opening set and was dominant from the word go. Rublev won 84% of his points on first serve, which proved to be the match-winning stat for him. On the other hand, Tsitsipas could just manage to win 70% of his points on first serve.

Rublev managed to win 79 points in the entire match, 16 more than the Greek’s tally of 63 points. The Russian served six aces in the entire match, compared to Tsitsipas’ seven aces. Rublev converted two of his three break point opportunities which tilted the match in the fourth seed’s favor. The second set was a much more closely contested affair, with the set being decided via a tiebreaker.

It was Rublev who maintained his composure in the tiebreaker, winning it 7-2 and progressing into the finals. The fourth seed has played high quality tennis this week in Rotterdam, having beaten the likes of Andy Murray and Jeremy Chardy. He would look to end the week in style, by clinching his first title of 2021 on Sunday.
