Karatsev is without doubt the most improved player on the men’s tour at the moment. The Russian, who is of Jewish heritage, was ranked at no.114 in the World before the Australian Open 2021. Now, he is world no. 28. The highlights in the last few months have been reaching the Semi-finals of the Australian Open, winning the Dubai Open, and now beating Novak Djokovic in the Semi-finals of the Serbia Open.
Aslan Karatsev played what is probably the match of his career so far, a three hour twenty-five minute slugfest, against Novak Djokovic. The tenacious Karatsev saved 23 of the 28 break points to eke out a three set win over his famed opponent. Karatsev won 7-5 4-6 6-4.
His opponent in the Final will be Italian Matteo Berrettini. The tall Italian who only returned to court a couple of weeks back after an injury layoff, he suffered an injury at the Australian Open, has got the job done in the tournament so far. In his first match he beat Marco Cecchinato in straight sets, and followed it up with another straight sets victory over Filip Krajinović. In the Semi-final he got some resistance from Japanese player Taro Daniel, but eventually overcame him 6-1 7-5 6-0.
