Frenchman Adrian Mannarino has suddenly found his long-lost form after the clay court season.
The world no. 35 failed to win a single match on clay, with gloomy first-round exits all over. However, he picked things up indoors, gradually picking up his performances on the way to this tournament. He exited in the first round at St. Petersburg, losing to a much lower-ranked opponent. However, his next tournament, the Bett1Hulks Championship, was a successful run. He defeated players like Miomir Kecmanovic to reach the quarterfinals, where he lost to the eventual winner, Alexander Zverev.
His next tournament was the Astana Open, where he produced a string of amazing performances to reach the finals of the event. Unfortunately, he fell short at the final hurdle, losing in straight sets to John Millman. The Frenchman’s most recent tournament was the Rolex Paris Masters, where he reached the third round but lost again to Alexander Zverev. However, he managed to bring a fight to the German this time, forcing the match to three sets. In Sofia, he defeated lucky loser Martin Klizan in three sets to reach the second round.
In the second round, he faces Egor Gerasimov. The Belarusian actually had a pretty similar season to Mannarino’s, suffering on clay but bucking up indoors.
Gerasimov also exited in the first round at St. Petersburg, but post that, reached the second round at the Bett1Hulks Championship. His most recent tournament was the Astana Open where he reached the quarters but lost to a talented Frances Tiafoe in three sets.
At the Sofia Open, the 27-year-old was forced to three sets in the first round by Viktor Troicki but pulled through with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win.
