Marin Cilic comes to Sofia having the eighth seed. The Croat isn’t having a splendid season, having won no titles this year. He suffered early exits in practically every tournament he played in, never making it to the quarterfinals of any. His most recent tournament was the ongoing 2020 Rolex Paris Masters, where he lost to talented Frenchman Ugo Humbert in the Round of 16.
The world no. 43 has failed to recreate his stunning form from 2017-2018 when he rose to his career-best ranking of 3. After winning the US Open in 2014, he has only managed to win six more titles to date. A dip in form resulted in his ranking nosediving in 2019, never quite recovering from it.
His opponent is the young Jonas Forejtek. The teenager is thirteen years younger than Cilic and hasn’t even turned pro yet. He has hardly competed in ATP Tour events, restricting himself to ITF and Challenger events.
