24-year-old Christian Garin had an outstanding start to the 2020 season, with two titles under his belt, propelling him to his career-best ranking of 18. However, since then, his form has slipped with disappointing early exits in many tournaments. He made the semifinals of the Hamburg Open and the third round at Roland Garros.

The World No. 22’s first-round match in Vienna was against a tough opponent – three-time Grand Slam winner Stanislas Wawrinka. It was always going to be a hard match for the young Chilean. However, he showed some perseverance and skill to outlast the Swiss and emerge the victor in three sets.

In the second round, he awaits a much tougher opponent in Dominic Thiem. The second seed and home favorite will be looking to impress in his home country by defending the Vienna title, which will give him a boost for the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals.

The Austrian has a commendable 20-6 win-loss record this season and one very special title too – the US Open, his first Grand Slam title. While he has been handed a tricky draw at this year’s Vienna Open, he will be having crowd support by his side. His first-round match was scheduled to be against Kei Nishikori, who withdrew from the tournament. The match was then rescheduled, and Vitaliy Sachko, a player who missed out on qualifying, got the lucky chance to play.
