Hugh Freeze was stunned after the referee denied his Auburn Tigers a touchdown during first-half crunch time against the Georgia Bulldogs. After reviewing the play on loop, the officials decided that Auburn quarterback Jackson Arnold did not have possession while crossing the goal line.

Saturday night at Jordan-Hare Stadium felt like a carnival affair, with alumni such as Cam Newton and Charles Barkley showing up to cheer for the Tigers as they took on their third SEC opponent. Georgia came to town on the back of a win against Kentucky following the hotly contested loss against Alabama.

Oklahoma transfer Jackson Arnold gave Auburn the lead in the first quarter, which kicker Alex McPherson extended with a field goal in moments into the second quarter.

Thirty seconds into the two-minute drill before the stoppage, Arnold rode his offensive lineman into the Georgia end zone. However, before the officials could make the official call, the Bulldogs’ DB Kyron Jones was seen running in the opposite direction with the ball in his hand.

Jones started celebrating after reaching the Auburn goal, much to the dismay of the Tigers’ supporters and Hugh Freeze.

Auburn and Hugh Freeze were left red-faced after officials denied them a touchdown

The announcers cleverly noted that the two-minute warning had occurred “32 minutes ago,” highlighting the lengthy deliberation by the TV umpire before making the final call. When the decision was finally relayed through the match referee, Auburn fans in the stands expressed their disappointment, reflecting the emotional investment they have in the game.

Upon initial observation, it appeared that Arnold had successfully crossed the white line with the ball before linebacker Raylen Wilson forcefully knocked it from his grasp. However, the announcers missed a crucial detail that the trained officials expertly identified during the review.

A split second before Wilson punched the ball, Georgia’s #3 CJ Allen made contact with Arnold’s arm to loosen up his grip. The ball came out, and Jones scored a fumble return TD, which was overturned.

Freeze’s anger on the sidelines was justified. He was denied not one but two touchdowns in the same drive.

Arnold scrambled with the ball on second and goal before the Georgia defenders tackled him to the ground. The Junior shot caller pleaded for a TD by raising his arms in the air, but the referee judged that he was down short of the goal.

Replays showed that Arnold extended his left arm to score the TD, but the elbow of his right arm had already touched the turf.

Georgia secured its third SEC win of the season

If the game had concluded at halftime, Auburn would have taken the victory; however, there were still two more quarters of football to play, presenting an opportunity for a comeback or shift in momentum for the other team.

Freeze’s team lacked the same spark that they had shown in the first half after play resumed. Hordes of penalties tipped the balance of the tie in Georgia’s favor.

Quarterback Gunner Stockton set up running back Chauncey Bowens for a two-yard run seven minutes into the third quarter before the Bulldogs’ kicker Peyton Woodring scored a field goal from 53 yards to give Georgia its first lead on the night.

Stockton sealed the game for the visitors in garbage time with a 10-yard scramble touchdown. The game ended in a 20-10 victory for the Bulldogs as they improved to 5-1 for the season. Stockton completed 23 passes for 212 yards and also ran 9 times with the ball for 26 yards and scored one touchdown.

Auburn, meanwhile, dropped to 3-3 as they remained winless in the conference. Arnold threw just 19 completions for 137 yards while rushing for 55 yards and one score.
