Austin Rivers recounted a story of how he skipped Stephen Curry's private island trip after a humiliating playoff loss.
Austin Rivers recounts Stephen Curry's island trip story
Austin Rivers has quite a love-hate relationship with Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry. Although he is the brother-in-law of the greatest shooter of all time, the two have matched up in a number of regular season and playoff matchups, with Curry almost always taking the edge in their brotherly rivalry. This was on full display when Rivers detailed why he rejected Curry’s family island trip.
On a recent episode of Overtime Megan’s Meg on the Mic podcast, she was joined by Austin Rivers as her latest guest. On the show, Rivers recounted a story from his time in the Denver Nuggets, where he declined an invitation from Curry to join him for a family trip to an island in Fiji. The reason for his refusal? Stephen Curry had just embarrassed Rivers and the Nuggets in the playoffs.
bro steph paid for the entire trip in fiji, even RENTED OUT an island, and austin rivers still didn’t go because of what happened in the playoffs 😭

In his story, Rivers is supposedly speaking of the time the Denver Nuggets took on the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs, which was the last time Curry and Rivers faced off against each other in the playoffs. In the series, Curry and the Warriors handily defeated the Nuggets in a 5 game gentleman’s sweep.
During that series, Stephen Curry averaged 28.0 points, 5.4 assists and 3.4 rebounds while averaging just 30 minutes per game and coming off the bench in the first two games. Rivers, who was filling in the starting role for an injured Jamal Murray, could only watch as the Nuggets were helpless against the championship bound Warriors.
Austin Rivers has been embarrassed by Stephen Curry before
Austin Rivers and Stephen Curry are brothers off the court, with Rivers’ sister being married to Curry’s brother, Seth. However, even though they share a family, they have fought many battles on the court. Unfortunately for Rivers, he has been on the wrong side of Curry creating history more often than not. He once recalled a time when he wanted to punch Curry because of sheer audacious greatness.
As Rivers detailed, he has seen many of Curry’s greatest highlights firsthand. But seeing Curry constantly embarrass him and his teammates with surreal plays and nonchalant celebrations always irked him. A lot of these instances took place during the early rivalry in the 2010’s between the Warriors and the Los Angeles Clippers, with both teams constantly in heated matchups.
Throughout his career, Stephen Curry has had the edge on Rivers, with a record of 29-8 in the regular-season and playoffs versus the highschool mixtape legend. Even so, as Rivers remarked himself, he and Curry remain friends and family off the court, with the veteran free agent able to see the bright side of Curry’s highlights as a fan.
