On Thursday during the game against Finland, Matthews was once again subjected to heavy heckling from the fans. Before the game when the cameras panned to him during the lineup, a loud chorus of boos rang around the arena.

The situation did not change for him in the game. During the first period, every time he touched the puck and tried to move around, he would find himself on the end of heavy boos.

However, in the end, it was Matthews who had the last laugh against the fans on Thursday. With a dynamic performance from the Tkachuk brothers – Brady and Matthew, Team USA ran out as 6-1 winners. Both Brady Tkachuk and Matthew Tkachuk scored twice in this game. Matthews meanwhile, assisted Jake Guentzel for their fourth goal.

The 27-year-old pointed out the atmosphere present inside the Bell Centre. He further claimed that getting booed from the rival fans meant that he was doing something right.

Yeah, I mean, we played here quite a bit and obviously, it’s always a great atmosphere. I think it’s something you just embrace and have fun with. I mean, if you’re getting booed, you must be doing something right.

Auston Matthews told the reporters in the press conference

Matthews later that because of this, he does not have any sort of issue with the fans.

There was one moment however, which did shock a few people. During the National Anthem of the USA, fans would raise their voice and rain down huge boos on the “Star Spangled Banner“. This is though not the first time that the national anthem has been booed.

In recent NHL games, both American and Canadian audiences have booed the anthems of their neighbors. This surge has come after U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order placing new tariffs on Canadian goods.
