In recent weeks, the Toronto Maple Leafs have played without their star player and captain Auston Matthews. After suffering an upper-body injury, the forward has missed the last seven games of the Maple Leafs.
His absence led to many wondering about his return. On Saturday, the 27-year-old spoke to the media and provided a crucial update regarding this.
In the press conference, Matthews revealed that he had traveled to Germany for treatment. He claimed that the injury flared up in the pre-season, and he soon started feeling worse. Thus, he decided to take a step back and re-evaluate this injury.
Matthews on spending five days in Germany: "(The injury) flared up in pre-season, felt better and started getting worse. I just felt it was time to take a step back, re-evaluate. It hasn't neccesarily gotten worse, but wasn't getting better. I wanted to be pro-active."

He was later asked about when he would likely be back in the lineup. The Leafs captain expressed he would “love to” go on Sunday night but Wednesday could be the day he is back in action. On that day, the Leafs will take on defending Stanley Cup champions Florida Panthers.
Prior to meeting the media, Matthews was spotted skating on the ice. In a post shared by TSN’s Mark Masters, the Leafs number 34 could be seen passing the puck before unleashing a powerful shot.

Craig Berube comments on having Auston Matthews back
After Auston Matthews got injured, there were several questions on how the team would play without their captain. In their response, the Toronto Maple Leafs went 6-1 including emphatic victories over the Boston Bruins and the Vegas Golden Knights. With Matthews now expected to be back soon, coach Craig Berube commented on this development.
The 58-year-old claimed it was “great” to have him back. The head coach further added that he was feeling a lot better which is good for them.

Before getting injured, Matthews was in top form and amazed 11 points (5 goals and 6 assists) in 13 games. This saw him pick off this season from where he dropped the last season. In the 2023-24 campaign, the American international scored a staggering amount of 69 goals and picked up 38 assists.
His return to the lineup could be a massive boost to the team this season. The Leafs are currently on a three-game winning run and could make it four if they emerge as winners on Sunday night against Utah Hockey Club.
