Besides sports, if there’s anything that this year’s Olympic Games aren’t missing, is the entertainment for the audience. And this time, they have got the most hilarious performance of break dance– trending as the “Kangaroo” dance.
This is the first time in history that the Olympic Games has introduced an entirely different sport of breakdancing. Representing Australia in the breakdance debut, Rachael Gunn, promptly known as B-girl Raygun, took the internet by storm after her viral performance of head-to-head battles against the USA, France, and Lithuania.
Raygun became an internet sensation with her unique moves, like swimming on the ground and kangaroo hopping, but not for the reasons she had hoped. Despite her creativity, she was eliminated from the round-robin stage without scoring a single point, as her moves were deemed not up to Olympic standards.
But the 36-year-old, who has a PhD in cultural studies, handled the elimination with grace, claiming that she brings more creativity in breakdancing, which is not often seen.
I was never going to beat these girls on what they do best, the dynamic and the power moves, so I wanted to move differently, be artistic and creative because how many chances do you get that in a lifetime to do that on an international stage.Raygun said in her statement
Raygun’s dance routine was described as ‘chaotic’, having one such step where she lifted one leg up while standing and arched her back with her arms bent, positioned near her ear.
Fan reaction to Raygun’s breakdance performance at Olympics
Breakdancing debut at the 2024 Paris Olympics was a historic moment. However, Raygun’s unconventional and “kangaroo” dance performance overshadowed the significance of it. It has attracted both surprise and laughter from audiences around the globe.
One fan wrote, “How did this qualify for the olympics?!,” while another wrote, “Wait…this is a sport? Are they actually competing?”
Here are some of the fan reactions:
Many are not happy seeing breakdancing as a sports competition at the Olympics, let alone seeing an athlete like Raygun compete in it. Some even expressed their shock after knowing how the 36-year-old professor was even qualified for such a competition on the global stage.
