Australian cricketer Aaron Summers set to make history by representing Southern Punjab in Pakistan Cup
Australian pacer Aaron Summers has made history as he is set to become the first overseas player to take part in Pakistan’s revamped one-day domestic tournament by representing Southern Punjab. The tournament is scheduled to begin from January 8 in Karachi. According to the Pakistan Cricket Board’s rules, one foreign player is allowed in each time if an NOC is submitted by the board of the nation that the player is a part of.
Aaron Summers has already played in Pakistan’s T20 franchise tournament – the Pakistan Super League for the Karachi Kings. Domestically, in Australia, he appears for Tasmania and the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League. He has played in a total of 3 List A match in his career as well and has just 1 wicket to his name.
Week-long training camp under Azhar Mahmood planned
The Pakistan Cricket Board stated in a press release about the details of Aaron Summers’ arrival. “The Tasmanian will arrive in Lahore on December 28 and after a week-long training camp under Azhar Mahmood at the National High Performance Centre, will join Southern Punjab in Karachi on January 5. Apart from Summers, Azhar, who has also been looped in for a short-term contract by Southern Punjab, will also work on Taimoor Bhatti, a 22-year-old rookie fast bowler from Rahim Yar Khan, who is yet to get domestic exposure,” the release said.
The borders of the Australian nation are closed at present due to a resurgence in COVID-19 cases but Aaron Summers has received special permission and exemption to travel to Pakistan to be a part of the One-Day cup. The right-arm pacer will undoubtedly be the one to watch out for in the tournament.
