Belinda Bencic vs Elise Mertens: Match Preview

Bencic doesn’t have much to show post the resumption in 2020. She just played a match at Rome Masters and lost in the Round of 32. The Swiss took the court for the first time after that at the Grampians Trophy last week, where she lost in the first round against Sorana Cirstea.
Although she managed to win the first two matches at the Australian Open, she hasn’t looked convincing at all. The 23-year-old was taken to a third set by Lauren Davis and Svetlana Kuznetsova in the first two rounds.
On the other hand, her opponent, Elise Mertens is in tremendous form. Mertens got her 2021 season off to a dream start, winning the title at the Gippsland Trophy.
She has continued her good run in the Australian Open too. The Belgian has won her early-round encounters against Leylah Fernandez and Lin Zhu in straight sets to set up the match against Bencic.

The two players haven’t met on tour yet. This will be their first meeting and given on the current form, the Belgian is the overwhelming favorite to win it. The H2H stands at 0-0.
Belinda Bencic vs Elise Mertens: Prediction

Although Bencic is ranked higher than Bertens, she currently doesn’t look promising at all. The Swiss will look to exploit Mertens on serve and will have to bring her ‘A’ game inorder to defeat the Belgian. Otherwise, expect Mertens to win comfortably.
Prediction: Mertens to win in straight set.
