Australian Open 2021: Bianca Andreescu sent packing early in the second round by giant killer Hsieh Su-wei
Bianca Andreescu had high hopes from this year’s Australian Open. This was her first tournament in a while and was supposed to be her comeback vehicle. Instead, the no.8 seed at this year’s Australian Open, lost to Hsieh Su-wei in her second round encounter 3-6 2-6 and now faces the ignominy of going back home in the first week itself. Another setback for the Canadian who has been battling injury and form loss since her shock US Open win in 2019.
Andreescu, who was coming back after a long layoff, had not looked that convincing in her first round victory against Mihaela Buzărnescu either, a match that she won in three sets 6-2 4-6 6-3 after toiling hard. In her second round encounter against Hsieh, she saw her serve completely desert her. A string of fouls, and then loss of points on her second serve sealed her defeat. This is one match that Andreescu will love to forget quickly and move on from.
Hsieh Su-wei plots the downfall of another big name
Su-wei has a penchant for beating the top ranked players. Even though Hsieh is ranked only at no.71 in the world, she has till date defeated 8 top 10 players in ten meetings against them. Her list of victims include Serena Williams, Simona Halep and even Naomi Osaka.
She now adds Bianca Andreescu’s scalp to her connection. With this win the Taiwanese veteran moves into the third round of the Australian Open 2021.
