Stefanos Tsitsipas won a five set thriller, Matteo Berrettini dropped a set but won his match, while Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev both won in straight sets. Borna Coric and Lorenzo Sonego were outplayed and outed from the Australian Open.
Rafael Nadal beats unruly fan and opponent on route to 3rd round
Nadal again showed signs of getting back to his best as he beat Michael Mmoh 6-4 6-1 6-2 in straight sets. An unruly fan tried to unsuccessfully bother Nadal as Nadal got on with his job and moved into the 3rd round.
Greek tragedy averted as Stefanos Tsitsipas moves into the third round
If this was a movie in a theatre it would have been a blockbuster. The match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Thanasi Kokkinakis had all such ingredients. Seeded 5th at the Open this year, this match was supposed to be a walk in the park for Tsitsipas, but rather in the end it was just about crossing the finishing line.
Kokkinakis gave a fantastic account of himself, and was unlucky to be on the losing side. In the end Tsitsipas kept his nerve and his serve to win in 5 sets
6-7 6-4 6-1 6-7 6-4.
Daniil Medvedev completes his second three set win in as many matches
Daniil Medvedev the 4th seed, took just 3 sets to dispatch off Spain’s Roberto Carballés Baena. The man on a mission Medvedev won the match 6-2 7-5 6-1.
Matteo Berrettini the Italian stallion wins
Berrettini overcame the 20 year old Tomas Machac in 4 sets to win 6-4 6-4 4-6 6-3. Berrettini, the 9th seed, was expected to win this match easy and he did. Although he did drop a set, there was never a moment during the match when his position was in doubt. In the third round he faces Karen Khachanov of Russia.
Andrey Rublev wins in straight sets
Rublev is seeded 7th at this year’s Australian Open and there is a good reason for it. Last season was his breakthrough season, a season where he reached the quarter final stage of two grand slams and won 5 WTA titles. Against Thiago Monteiro, Rublev won in straight sets 6-4 6-4 7-6.
Borna Coric and Lorenzo Sonego are going home
Coric lost his 2nd round match to Mackenzie McDonald 6-4 6-2 4-6 6-4, while Sonego lost to veteran Feliciano López 7-5 6-3 3-6 5-7 4-6.
