Australian Open 2021: Day 5– Halep, Serena, Osaka, Sabalenka, all the big names march into the 4th round
Day 5 of the Australian open was kind to most of the top women seeds as they made it safely past the 3rd and into the 4th round. Simona Halep, Naomi Osaka and Aryna Sabalenka came through without much discomfort but Serena Williams had to fight to fend off her opponent. Past finalist Garbine Muguruza won in straight sets and so did 19th seed Markéta Vondroušová.
Halep makes short work of her 3rd round opponent
Against Veronika Kudermetova, Halep again demonstrated the wisdom of having discipline in your game. Against a much bigger and powerful opponent, Halep played with laser precision, forcing Kudermetova to commit unforced errors. Under sustained Halep pressure, Kudermetova crumbled 6-1 6-3.
Serena Williams the old lioness still rules the jungle
Anastasia Potapova pushed Serena in the first set. But once Serena found a way to win the first set, she breezed past her opponent in the second. The 10th seed won in straight sets 7-6 6-2.
Osaka the next superstar
Third seed Osaka hasn’t really faced a real challenge in this year’s competition so far. In all the three rounds she has won in straight sets and with a lot of ease. Even 27th seed Arab woman Ons Jabeur failed to give Osaka a real fight as she went down 6-3 6-2. Muguruza should be a tougher opponent in the 4th round.
Sabalenka keeps powering her way through
Sabalenka plays a game based on power and aggression. She had been ruthless in her victories in the first two games, and in the third it was no different. Against American Ann Li , Sabalenka showed no mercy as she motored past her 6-3 6-1.
Muguruza and Hsieh win too
Muguruza won 6-1 6-1 against Zarina Diyas, and Hsieh overcame Errani 6-4 2-6 7-5.
