Australian Open 2021: Day3 – Djokovic, Thiem, Shapovalov, Schwartzman all advance to the third round, Wawrinka falls
Day 3 of the Australian Open saw most top seeds extend their stay in the tournament. Defending champion Novak Djokovic battled into the third round in four sets. There was no such worry for Dominic Thiem, Denis Shapovalov or Diego Schwartzman as all three booked their third round seats with straight set victories.
No such luck for Former winner and no.17 seed Stanislas Wawrinka who exited the tournament on day3.
Djokovic battles heat and opponent on route Australian open third round
Djokovic had played a near perfect match in his first round. He beat Jérémy Chardy 6-3 6-1 6-2 and looked imperious doing it. But in his second round match he was given a tough fight by American Frances Tiafoe. Lung bursting rallies marked the contest as both players struggled under the baking Sun. In the end Djokovic managed to close out the match in 4 sets winning 6-3 6-7 7-6 6-3.
Dominic Thiem looks like the real deal
The no.3 seed had looked impressive in his first round win against Mikhail Kukushkin. In his second round match against Dominik Koepfer he built on that impression as he blanked his opponent 6-4 6-0 6-2. Thiem looks like a serious challenger for the trophy.
Shapovalov was impressive in the manner of his victory
The 11th seed Shapovalov was a little stretched in his first round encounter against Sinner. A contest that he had won in 5 sets. But in his second round match against Bernard Tomic he was brazenly dismissive of the Australian and spent minimum time on court as he completed a straight sets win 6-1 6-3 6-2 in less than 2 hours.
Schwartzman plays a great match
Seed no.8 Diego Schwartzman played a great game of tennis as he overcame Frenchman Alexandre Müller in straight sets 6-2 6-0 6-3. In the heat of the Australian summer, winning a game in under two hours can sometimes turn out to be very important. And kudos to Schwartzman for doing that.
Stanislas Wawrinka loses in his 5 set encounter
Wawrinka is a former Australian Open Champion. Seeded no.17 in this year’s open, he suffered defeat at the hands of Marton Fucsovics. Wawrinka played some overcautious tennis, especially in the tie-breakers, and paid a heavy price for it. In the end Fucsovics won 7-5 6-1 4-6 2-6 7-6.
