Australian Open 2021: “Not under control” – Rafael Nadal gives an update on his back injury

After cruising past American Michael Mmoh in the second round of the Australian Open, Rafael Nadal stated that his persistent back problem was still ‘not under control’. He had initially talked about the injury during the ATP Cup that preceded the Grand Slam when pulled out of his singles tie although he was initially named and touted to be the one to play the singles encounter for Spain.
Due to the injury, Nadal has looked a tad bit uncomfortable on court and he has been forced to reduce the pace of his serve. His movement has also not been as free-flowing as it usually is. The Spaniard was once again asked about the status of his back after the second round win and he stated that it wasn’t in the best of shape but that he was trying his best to get it back quickly.

On being asked about the injury after his win over Michael Mmoh, Rafael Nadal said, “No, not under control, honestly. No, I keep doing the things that I can. If you see my motion on the serve is different than what I would like. I am trying to find solutions every day. I just keep fighting for find a solution.” Nadal had earlier admitted during his first round win that he had to make adjustments to his serve due to the injury.
Nadal will face Cameron Norrie of Great Britain in the third round of the Australian Open as he bids to overtake Roger Federer and become the first male player to win 21 Grand Slams in history.
