Novak Djokovic faced off against the American Frances Tiafoe in the second round on the third day of the Australian Open 2021. Tiafoe was by no means a pushover, he gave the champ a tough time. Although, he did make a few mistakes that did not go unpunished by Djokovic.

The match ended with Novak Djokovic winning with a score that said 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6, 6-3.

In the first set, Djokovic got the first three games thanks to some unintentional errors from the American. But The fourth game was taken by Frances with Djokovic on serve. Djokovic won the next game to make it 4-1. But Tiafoe fought back with some really nice volley to make it 4-3. However, Tiafoe ended up making a few mistakes in the next games and Djokovic took the set with 6-3.

By the second set, the stats showed Djokovic as the clear favorite. And it did seems so until Tiafoe got a lead of 2-1 but Djokovic being a veteran of the game did his best to get back in the game. Tiafoe played some excellent serves and even got a few aces. Everyone was on the edge of their seats when the set score got to 6-5 with Tiafoe in the lead. But Tiafoe fumbled it and the game got pushed to 6-6. And Tiafoe despite the mistakes won the tiebreaker to take the set. The set ended with a score of 7-6(3).

The third set started with Djokovic on the service and he did what he does best. Tiafoe also brought the momentum from the previous set and it showed in his volleys. However, Djokovic still got a 3-0 lead on the American. This changed very quickly as Frances Tiafoe kept his aggression and made it a tie at 3-3. This set was also taken to the tie breaker at 6-6. The set was taken by Djokovic in the end with the score of 7-6(2).

By the fourth set, the players were showing signs of fatigue. The set started with Tiafoe in the service which served him well as he won the first game. Djokovic was able to equalize the deficit quickly but faltered again with Tiafoe taking the lead again with 3-2. Both the players gave whatever they had in this match and the match ended with a score of 6-3. Novak came to form as the sun changed its position engulfing the court in the shadow and took the set.

In the post-match interview, Novak Djokovic expressed that the match was tough and praised Tiafoe for giving a good challenge. He further talked about how comfortable he is playing in Melbourne.
