Australian Open 2021: Official start date ‘not confirmed’ despite reports

The confirmation date of the much-awaited, Australian Open 2021, is yet to be announced. The committee behind the organisation of the event is Tennis Australia. It is still awaiting confirmation from the Victorian state government regarding the proceedings of the tournament.

Reports have stated that the event is likely to begin from after a three-week delay, from February 8. However, in an interview with Associated Press, a Tennis Australia spokesperson revealed that nothing was set-in-stone yet.

Further clarification regarding the new “official date”

She stated, “There have been many reports, but we don’t have final details yet signed off by the Victorian government yet.”

The Age and others reported that a ‘note’ was sent by the tournament director, Craig Tiley, which disclosed the start date and other guidelines of the event. Tiley apparently stated, “It’s taken a while. But the great news is it looks like we are going to be able to hold the AO 8 February.”

In contrast to this, Victorian sports minister, Martin Pakula said that the tournament will see a delay of a week or two.

“There’s a number of potential dates on the table. I’ve seen reports that suggest that it’s likely to be delayed by a week or two. I think that’s still most likely,” he added.

Citing the discrepancies, the spokesperson of T.A has confirmed that all the reports are speculation and any official announcement is yet to be made.
