Simona Halep vs Iga Swiatek: Preview

Iga Swiatek

World no.2 Simona Halep is already an established player on the WTA tour. She has been one of the most consistent faces in women’s tennis over the past few years. She is a former French Open champion, Wimbledon champion and a former world no.1.

Having said that, she is one of the favorites to win the Australian Open. She defeated two Aussies, Lizette Cabrera and Ajla Tomljanović in the initial two rounds before defeating Veronika Kudermetova 6-1,6-3 in the third round.

But to her dismay, she has been drawn with Iga Swiatek, her opponent in the 4th round. Pole Swiatek has been rising on tour since her shocking Roland Garros 2020 triumph. She is now on a 10 match winning streak in grand slams.

She is yet to drop a set in the tournament, defeating Arantxa Rus and Camila Giorgi in the first two rounds before defeating Fiona Ferro 6-4,6-3 in the third round.

This will be the third meeting between the two players. The H2H currently stands at 1-1. Interestingly, both of their previous meetings have come at the Roland Garros. Swiatek won the last time they met in straight sets.

Simona Halep vs Iga Swiatek: Prediction

Iga Swiatek

A match of such quality usually comes in the second week of the grand slam. But because of Swiatek’s ranking, they meet early. One may just flip a coin to predict who wins; the match starts at dead 50-50.

But just on her giant killing abilities, Swiatek may take the edge. She defeated Halep in Round of 16 at Roland Garros last year and may do the same in Melbourne too.

Prediction: Swiatek to win in three sets
