India’s no.2 men’s singles player, Sumit Nagal was expecting a clash against a seeded player in his opener but the Indian drew Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis as his first round opponent at the Australian Open.

It will be their second clash in as many weeks. The two also clashed at the Murray River Open where Nagal lost in straight sets.

This will be the Indian’s third grand slam main draw appearance. He competed in US Open (2019, 2020) twice. Nagal is currently ranked 139th in the world and has a strong baseline game.

Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis has had a decent run post the tour resumption in 2020. He made it to the third round of the US Open where he was taken down by eventual semifinalist Pablo Carreno Busta. And also made it to the second round of the French Open losing to Novak Djokovic.

He started his 2021 season on a decent run. He reached the pre-quarters at the Murray River Open defeating Nagal and Kubler in the process.
