Aryna Sabalenka made a step further to her goal of winning the Australian Open for the third consecutive time. The Belarusian has been a standout player this season and has yet to lose a match in the ten times she has stepped on the court. But, going into the semifinals of the Melbourne Grand Slam, she has a difficult task to deal with in Paula Badosa.

Badosa continued her resurgence to the WTA Top 10 after playing some incredible tennis in the season’s opening major event. She showed character in her quarter-final match against Coco Gauff to send the American star packing, and will be looking forward to doing the same against the defending champion.

Paula Badosa, on the other hand, had secured only one win before arriving for the Australian Open. The Spaniard struggled to play her best tennis at the Brisbane International and Adelaide International. However, in Melbourne, she began with two straight sets victory against Wang Xinyu and Talia Gibson.

She faced her first test against Marta Kostyuk in the third round but did well to overcome the Ukrainian star in 6-4, 4-6, 3-6. She then fought hard to beat Serbian Olga Danilovic 6-1, 7-6(2). On Tuesday (January 21), she shocked the tennis world by defeating Coco Gauff 7-5, 6-4 to reach her first Grand Slam semifinals.
