Novak Djokovic evaded a very complicated first-round match against Nishesh Basavareddy at the Australian Open. The Serbian had to come from behind to beat the American teenager to renew his hopes of winning his 25th Grand Slam. He will now face Portuguese youngster Jaime Faria in the next round.
Faria, who has been fantastic at the Challenger Tour has no experience playing in a Grand Slam event. In fact, the 21-year-old is participating in a major tournament main draw for the first time after serving the qualifying rounds.

Novak Djokovic failed to win a Grand Slam title last year for the first time since 2017. Since winning the 2023 US Open, he has been aiming to become the first player since the Open Era to win 25 Grand Slams. He only reached one final last year, a big drop from the heights he set by reaching all four major finals in 2023.
However, this season, he has been eager to revive his game and perhaps his motivation for more silverware. He believed all that could be gotten in Andy Murray, who is his coach at the Australian Open. He struggled to reach a Grand Slam draw with his best run coming at the French Open last year, where he was eliminated in the final qualifying round.
At this year’s Australian Open, the 21-year-old made sure he used the opportunity of qualifying for his first Grand Slam main draw very effectively. The World No.125 stunned Pavel Kotov in straight sets 6-1, 6-1, 7-5. The Portuguese star showed calm and composure, especially in the third set, as Kotov looked like forcing the match to the fourth.

Novak Djokovic and Jaime Faria have never met on the court. In fact, the year when Faria was born was the same year Djokovic turned professional. The Portuguese star has energy and is known to play aggressively on the court. But Faria’s major problem is that he exudes confidence against Challenger players but hasn’t played against many ATP players.
The ATP is totally different from the Challenger even though both are competitive. And in the ATP, Djokovic has the best experience having won more titles than any player currently in the division.
