Daniil Medvedev, at the 2026 Australian Open, will be up against a player who has troubled him a lot last year. It’s youngster Learner Tien, who has made the second week of a Grand Slam tournament for the second time in his career.

After battling past compatriot Marcos Giron in five sets in the first round, Tien went past Alexander Shevchenko before knocking out Nuno Borges in the third round. Medvedev first beat Jesper de Jong and survived a scare against Quentin Halys. Before setting up the clash with Tien, he eliminated Fabian Marozsan.

Daniil Medvedev vs. Learner Tien: Match Preview

Daniil Medvedev already has a title to his name this year. Prior to arriving in Melbourne, the Russian ace defeated Brandon Nakashima in the final of the Brisbane International. It was Medvedev’s 22nd title in as many cities.

Medvedev is a three-time finalist at Melbourne Park. He reached the stage in 2021, 2022, and 2024, losing the matches to Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Jannik Sinner, respectively.

The 2021 US Open champion struggled a lot last year. In Majors, it was only at the Australian Open that he was able to make the second round. In the remaining three Majors, he suffered first-round exits. Last year, the 29-year-old made two finals: he lost the Halle Open to Alexander Bublik and beat Corentin Moutet to clinch his first title since the 2023 Italian Open. Medvedev has made the fourth round of a Major for the first time since losing the 2024 US Open quarterfinal.

Tien has so far made two tour-level finals. Last year, after losing to Sinner in the China Open final, Tien defeated Cameron Norrie in the Moselle Open final.

Tien has reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament for the second time in his career. After making his Grand Slam debut at the 2022 US Open, Tien exited two more times in the first round in New York.

Then last year, he booked a spot in the fourth round of the Australian Open, where Lorenzo Sonego eliminated him. In the next three Majors, Tien suffered early-round exits: reached the first rounds of the French Open and the US Open, and the second round of Wimbledon. Tien, after finishing the 2024 Next-Gen ATP Finals as runner-up (lost to Joao Fonseca), was successful in taking home the trophy by defeating Alexander Blockx last year.

Next in the China Open final, Tien improved his head-to-head record after the former World No.1 handed him the walkover in the third set. But Medvedev was successful in ending their third meeting in his favor in the fourth round of the Shanghai Masters.

The two have played 11 sets against each other. Five of these sets reached the tie-break, and two more ended at 7-5. So the tennis world is expecting another thrilling five-set battle between the two.
