Elina Svitolina advanced into the second week of a Grand Slam tournament for the 21st time at the Australian Open after beating Diana Shnaider, a Russian player. The Ukrainian star has never hidden her desire to beat Russian players due to the ongoing conflict between the two countries. She will face a more difficult Russian opponent, Mirra Andreeva, in the fourth round in Melbourne.

Andreeva has once again begun the season on a high level, the same way she did in 2025, which saw her win two WTA 1000 events in a month. She has won her first title of the season and she has dropped just one set at the Australian Open. She will be seeking to beat Svitolina for the second consecutive time on tour.

Elina Svitolina vs. Mirra Andreeva: Match Preview

Elina Svitolina holds an 8-0 record on tour this season. The Ukrainian star looks refreshed on the court after taking a mental break last year. She didn’t feature in any tournament after the 2025 US Open following successive poor results on tour. She kicked off her 2026 campaign with a triumph at the Auckland Classics.

The 12th seed is yet to drop a set at the Australian Open, winning Cristina Bucșa 6-4, 6-1 in the first round. In the second round, she overcame Poland’s Linda Klimovicova 7-5, 6-1 before coming through a high-intensity battle over No.23 seed Diana Shnaider 7-6(4), 6-3 in the third round of the Melbourne Grand Slam.

On the other hand, Mirra Andreeva failed to continue her 2025 early form into the second half of the season. She missed out on the WTA Finals despite being ranked in the top 5 at one time in the season. However, following a good pre-season, she kicked off her 2026 season with a quarter-final exit at the Brisbane International.

It was in Adelaide that she hit an extraordinary form, beating Victoria Mboko in the final without dropping a set throughout the tournament. In Melbourne, she has continued with the momentum, beating Donna Vekic 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 in the first round before breezing past Maria Sakkari and Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the second and third rounds.

Elina Svitolina vs Mirra Andreeva: Match Prediction

Elina Svitolina will be seeking to reach the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for the second consecutive year. She reached that stage of the tournament last year before eventual champion Madison Keys defeated her. She has been impressive on the court this season, but she faced a sensation, Mirra Andreeva.

The last time (which is the only time) Svitolina and Andreeva met on the court was at last year’s Indian Wells quarter-finals, which the latter won in straight sets. In Melbourne, Andreeva is bidding to reach her fourth Grand Slam quarter-finals, having reached her first at the 2024 French Open in Paris.

However, Svitolina is seeking to reach her 14th major tournament quarter-finals and fourth at the Australian Open. She’s in a strong position to win the match due to her current form and good record against Russian players.

In fact, Andreeva is the only Russian player to beat her since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. She will be eager to make a statement for her country by beating the teenage star in Melbourne on Sunday (January 25).
