The sun in Australia is no joke! Excessive exposure to the sunlight could lead to what WTA tennis ace Renata Zarazua has suffered while playing tournaments Down Under.
The World No.84 started her campaign for the 2026 season at the ASB Classic, where she lost to China’s Wang Xinyu in the fourth round. Zarazua, after playing the qualifying rounds of the Hobart International, made the fourth round, losing in straight sets to Iva Jovic.
The 28-year-old is in Melbourne and will start her Australian Open campaign against Marie Bouzkova on January 19. Ahead of the event, Zarazua took to her Instagram and posed topless to share the brutal reality of overexposure, with the top part of her back being badly sunburned. She captioned the painful-looking picture with: “The Australian sun is no joke.”

Prior to her Hobart International exit, she eliminated World No.66 Hailey Baptiste in her opening round. At the ASB Classic, she also featured in doubles, partnering with Jesika Maleckova. The pair first knocked out Asia Muhammad and Erin Routliffe but withdrew from the quarterfinal match where they were scheduled to lock horns with the team of Jovic and Alexandra Eala.
The main draw of the Australian Open is scheduled to begin on Sunday (August 18). Zarazua has so far made two main draw appearances in the tournament, making her debut in 2024, where she suffered a three-set defeat in the first round at the hands of Martina Trevisan. Last year, her run ended in the second round with a straight-set defeat to two-time Grand Slam singles finalist JasminePaolini.
In Grand Slam events, Zarazua has yet to progress beyond the second round. She made the second round five times (in every Major). The Mexican ace made her Grand Slam main draw debut at the 2020 French Open.
Zarazua won’t be playing doubles in this year’s Australian Open. In WTA 1000 events, Zarazua has not yet reached the third round, losing in the second round thrice (in the 2022 Miami Open, the 2025 Canadian Open, and the Cincinnati Masters).
Renata Zarazua scripted history at the US Open last year by defeating Madison Keys
Last year at the US Open, Renata Zarazua caused one of the biggest upsets when she knocked out Madison Keys in the first round after a three-set battle. This made her the first Mexican to defeat a top 10 seed in a Grand Slam tournament since 1995.

It was the second time Zarazua clashed with the American. In the first round of the 2024 French Open, the reigning Australian Open champion registered a straight-set win.
Last year, Keys tasted her career’s first Grand Slam glory when she upset World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in the Australian Open final, denying the Belarusian a three-peat. Since that win, however, Keys failed to reach another final.
Before winning her career’s biggest title, the 30-year-old defeated Jessica Pegula in the Adelaide International final. The ninth seed at the Australian Open will start her title defense against Oleksandra Oliynykova.
Before arriving in Melbourne, Keys featured in two warm-up tournaments. She started her campaign for the 2026 season at the Brisbane International, where the eventual champion and also the defending champion, Sabalenka, eliminated her in the quarterfinals in straight sets.
In Adelaide, reigning Canadian Open champion Victoria Mboko registered a three-set win against her in the quarterfinals. The Australian Open title was Keys’ career’s second Big Title, as she also has the 2019 Cincinnati Open title to her name. Keys also finished the 2017 US Open as the runner-up, losing the final in straight sets at the hands of compatriot Sloane Stephens.
