Ace Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen went down fighting against the World No.1 Viktor Axelsen in Birmingham at the All England Open final. The Danish badminton player, who won the top prize at the Tokyo Olympics clinched his second title on Sunday.
The 20-year-old Lakshya has exhibited a phenomenal form in the sport across various parts of the globe in the last couple of years. Reacting to his latest achievement, former shooting champion and Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra hailed the youngster’s heroics at the BWF Super 1000 tournament.
“For all the talent @lakshya_sen possesses, it was the fighting spirit he displayed last night that makes him a champion. Going down but going down fighting – the simplest definition of sport and life. Detached from the result, this is what matters the most. Respect! #AllEngland2022,” the Beijing 2008 10m air rifle champion posted on his official Twitter account.
“There’s a lot of pressure before the match”
Lakshya Sen is now only the fifth Indian after Prakash Nath (1947), Prakash Padukone (1980, 1981), Pullela Gopichand (2001) and Saina Nehwal (2015) to reach the final of the prestigious tournament.
“I think the strategy was there. I played him last week but today he was looking solid in attack and defence as well. He was really patient and played a really good game,” Sen said after the match.
He added: “In the opening game, I committed a lot of errors, that cost me the game. I was there in the second game but again he was too solid for me to put the shuttle down.
“There was a lot of pressure before the match but when I was on court it was just another match for me. I played a really crucial match yesterday and that gave me confidence but credit to him for playing a perfect game.”
