Bajrang Punia and Elavenil Valarivan receive top honors at FICCI India Sports Awards
Wrestler Bajrang Punia and shooter Elavenil Valarivan both of whom will take part in the Tokyo Olympic Games next year received top honors at the FICCI India Sports Awards 2020 which was held virtually for the first time ever due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Both sportspersons had a stellar year in 2019 as well as in 2020 and deservedly were awarded the ‘Sportsperson of the Year’ award in the male and female category respectively. FICCI – Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry organizes these award ceremonies every year to ‘acknowledge and recognize the contribution of sportspersons and various stakeholders who deliver excellent results throughout a year’.
‘Want to win lots of medals for the country‘
On receiving the award, Bajrang Punia and Elavenil Valarivan expressed delight. Bajrang who is currently in the USA for training said, “My aim in the future will again be to give my best and win lots of medals for the country. Such recognitions motivate me to keep doing well, and it gives me huge joy. I also want to take this opportunity to congratulate all the other winners.“
Elavenil said, “I would like to thank my family first for always standing by me, my mentor Gagan Narang and my coach Neha Chauhan for always believing in me. I would also like to thank the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) for always supporting and pushing us through all our hard times, and also the Sports Authority of India for making sure that we are equipped with everything we need.”
