Bajrang Punia set to go to USA for one-month training camp

Mission Olympics has approved a one-month training camp in USA for wrestler Bajrang Punia. He is India’s biggest medal hopes at the Tokyo Olympics.

Mission Olympic Cell is a body set up by the Sports Authority of India (SAI). It was established to select athletes who are to get assistance under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme. The decision regarding Punia’s training camp was taken at a meeting of Mission Olympic Cell held on Thursday, a press release stated.

Bajrang Punia has been training at the SAI Sonepat center after the resumption of training camps post the lockdown. He will travel to USA with coach, Emzarios Bentinidis and physio, Dhananjay.

Punia will get to train with top international wrestlers there. He will train under head coach Sergei Beloglazov who is himself a two-time Olympic champion. The camp will take place from 4 December to 3 January at the Cliff Keen Wrestling Club, Michigan. The approximate cost is Rs.14 lakhs.

Punia is currently World No. 2 in the 65 kg category. He has already qualified for the Tokyo Olympics after earning a quota at the 2019 World Championships. Punia, however, has preferred to go to the camp over the Individual World Cup scheduled in Serbia’s Belgrade from 12 to 18 December.
