After going 6-0 for the season following their win over the Sooners, Texas players used former Sooners QB Baker Mayfield's jersey as a pincushion.

Baker Mayfield dominated the Texas Longhorns during his college days with the Oklahoma Sooners in the Red River Rivalry from 2014-2017. Yet, he is still catching strays even after spending almost seven years in the NFL.

On Saturday, Texas and Oklahoma met for the latest edition of their fierce rivalry. However, the Longhorns, who are also the #1 ranked team in the nation according to AP, secured a commanding 34-3 win over the #18 Sooners.

Quarterback Quinn Ewers started his first game following his injury that kept him out of the last two. Ewers completed 20 of 29 for 199 yards. 1 touchdown and 1 interception. Running back Quintrevion Wisner carried the ball 13 times for 118 yards and 1 rushing touchdown, while wide receiver Gunnar Helm caught 5 passes for 91 yards and 1 touchdown.

At this point, no one was aware that the Texas players would give a shoutout to former foe Baker Mayfield in an unexpected manner. The cameras caught Texas linebackers Anthony Hill Jr. and Barryn Sorrell walking toward the center circle with Sorrell carrying a massive Longhorns flag in his hands.

Hill placed a Sooners jersey on the ground, and Sorrell lodged the flag through it, proclaiming their hierarchy. After a few replays, it was possible to deduce the owner of the jersey through its number, #6, which Mayfield used to wear in college and still uses on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers jersey.

Baker Mayfield’s record against Texas

Mayfield was often the Longhorns’ Achilles’ heel while they faced against each other. His best outing came during the 2016 fixture, in which he completed over 400 total yards, four touchdowns, and two picks.

However, not every game goes the way one hopes to. Just a year earlier in 2015, Texas restricted the now 29-year-old quarterback to just under 225 total yards.

In October last year, ESPN’s Pat McAfee asked the Pro Bowler’s honest opinion on the Texas Longhorns because of his connection with the Sooners.

I hated Texas… Grew up in their backyard. My dad introduced me to a lot of the coaches on (former coach Barry Switzer’s) staff. So, growing up I used to go to OU games all the time, and just right in the enemy town down there in Austin.

Well, the feeling remains mutual, as Hill and Sorrell’s actions suggested. Regardless, Mayfield faced the Longhorns on four separate occasions and has a 2-2 record. He was 2-1 with the Sooners, and the additional loss happened when he was part of Texas Tech.

Mayfield has brought that Sooners energy to Tampa Bay, as the first episode of ‘The Undercover’ showed. He led the Buccaneers to a 9-8 finish in his first year and played in the divisional round. The Bucs hierarchy awarded him with a three-year $100 million extension, and they are currently 3-2 after five games waiting to play NFC South rivals the New Orleans Saints.
