When the Cleveland Browns drafted Baker Mayfield in 2018 as the first overall pick, they had high expectations from the quarterback– which to a certain extent he fulfilled by leading them to their first playoff victory in over three decades. However, things changed evidently in 2021 and eventually landed Mayfield in Tampa Bay last year.
Following the fiasco surrounding Odell Beckham Jr., Mayfield found himself having difficulties with some of his teammates. In addition to that, the signal-caller was playing through a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder which eventually made things even worse for him. The Browns then brought in Deshaun Watson to replace the former No. 1 pick.
While talking about the circumstances that caused his departure from Cleveland, Mayfield shared his one regret that he still carries with him during his recent appearance on the Pardon My Take podcast.
The last year in Cleveland as banged up as I was, looking back. I truly believe everything happens for a reason, playing through injuries and whatnot I wouldn't change it now obviously. But in the midst of it should I have probably gotten surgery and sat out, year probably.Baker Mayfield said
Mayfield sustained the injury in week 2 of the 2021 NFL season but he was insistent on playing the game so he was given a harness to wear for pain relief while throwing the ball using his other shoulder. Though it provided some relief to the quarterback from the pain, it restricted his ability to play to the full potential.

While talking about his injury, the former Heisman trophy winner also revealed how he had to get a coach to retach himself with the throwing motion following his injury.
I got with a coach and redid everything cause I had manufactured having an arm stuck to my body, leg was all beat up too, so many factors. Like I said, I'm a stubborn a**hole.Baker Mayfield added
Mayfield had an option to get the surgery right after sustaining it. However, he felt an obligation to continue playing and stand by the expectations of the fans.
He disclosed having a “blue-collar attitude,” which means fighting through any hurdle, and also called his departure from Cleveland the lowest point of his career.
