Baker Mayfield is a Texas native through and through. He would have liked to stay and flourish at Texas Tech, but situations forced him to move to Oklahoma, which then enabled him to become a 1st overall NFL pick.
That No. 1 pick status came with a lot of pressure on his shoulders, and when he struggled ever so slightly, the Cleveland Browns decided to part ways with him.
But in true Texas fashion, the now 30-year-old dug his teeth in and worked his way back up to become the franchise quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
This job also came with a lot of pressure, as he was effectively taking over from the great Tom Brady. However, he has managed to handle the pressure and has continued the Buccaneers’ streak of reaching the playoffs.
Last season, even though he did his part, there were some issues the team could not overcome. This time, they seem to be back to their best health, and there are no more excuses to hide behind.
Against the Houston Texans, the Buccaneers had plenty of opportunities to stretch their lead. But 4 straight punts in the second half and a missed field goal were not the way to win a game.
All this while, the Texans took advantage of those opportunities, and Mayfield’s former teammate, Nick Chubb, scored a touchdown to take the lead. But the Buccaneers’ next drive threatened to again stop with a punt.
Gutsy call to go on 4th down deep in their own territory and Baker picks up the first!

On a 4th & 10, the QB had to take matters into his hands. He first slithered away from the swarming Texans’ defense, then ran towards his left to garner a crucial first down before being high-sided by safety CJ Gardner-Johnson.
Baker Mayfield’s run sparks Buccaneers game-winning touchdown
Watching their quarterback being thrown up in the air by that tackle, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers huddled and seemingly decided to finish off what Baker Mayfield started.

None of the receivers the Texas native targeted missed their catch, which was surprising considering they missed a lot in the first three quarters of the game.
Those passes saw the away team march 50 yards down the field and position themselves 7 yards from the end zone. The Texans took another timeout to reset their defense, knowing the passing form of Mayfield was threatening to flip the game on its head.
Maybe the Buccaneers anticipated that, and instead, their QB handed the ball to running back Rachaad White, who took advantage of a gaping hole in front of him to march towards the end zone.
Even though three other help defenders collapsed to try and stop him, the 26-year-old had enough momentum in his legs to ensure the ball crossed the line before his backside touched the grass.
Skip Bayless hails Baker Mayfield as the most clutch quarterback in the NFL
This is not the first time Baker Mayfield has engineered a stellar 4th quarter win for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Veteran analyst Skip Bayless has been covering the game for far too long to know how clutch the Oklahoma alum can be.
If there’s a quarterback more clutch than Baker Mayfield, I don’t know him.
Skip Bayless wrote
Bayless believes the Buccaneers’ star is the most clutch QB in the league. That is a major claim considering there are others who warrant a debate about themselves. Stars like Josh Allen have been on a streak since last season.

So has Patrick Mahomes, but the Chiefs’ struggles seem to have taken the shine off his efforts. If Mayfield can continue coming up clutch and his team follows through, they could be a threat to at least go deep into the playoffs.
