The Tampa Bay Buccaneers headed into Arrowhead Stadium knowing that winning against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs was a tough task. But quarterback Baker Mayfield wanted to upset the back-to-back Super Bowl champions.
He and his Buccaneers did a good job to keep themselves in the game when at one point the Chiefs looked like they would win. After falling behind in the first half, Baker Mayfield rallied his team to take the lead in the third quarter. But in the final quarter, his counterpart led the Chiefs to a lead that seemed to ice the game.
But Mayfield wanted to keep hopes alive as he drove the field in less than two minutes to level the game. With that score taking it to overtime, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had one more shot at finishing the upset. Or so they thought until the coin toss came up.
The similar-age quarterbacks stood in the center of the field for referee John Hussey to toss the coin and give the winner the choice. Mayfield called tails and then waited for Hussey to reveal what the coin landed on.

As soon as the official said it was heads that won, Baker Mayfield tilted his head back. His reaction showed that he was pained to lose the toss to his opponent. He knew that no team in the NFL is as good as the Chiefs in clutch situations such as overtime.
More pain for Baker Mayfield as former teammate wins it for Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs did exactly as Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers thought after the coin toss. They drove the length of the field, slowly and steadily chipping away yards as they reached the goal line. Knowing that they needed a touchdown to win, the Chiefs ran both the run as well as pass plays.
But on both downs, the Buccaneers’ stud defense stopped them in their tracks even though some egregious penalties were missed. On the next third and one, Patrick Mahomes handed it to now lead running back Kareem Hunt again. This time, with excellent blocking in front, Hunt pounded into the endzone.

The resulting touchdown won the eighth straight game for the unbeaten Kansas City Chiefs. For their opponents, it was a heartbreaking way to lose their third straight. Now the Buccaneers find themselves with a .500 record.
But that record was nothing compared to what Baker Mayfield felt, knowing one of his close former teammates scored the winning touchdown to add to his misery. Now the quarterback will fly back home to face another playoff contender next week.
