Baker Mayfield has always played the underdog role since college. From being a walk-on to starring for Oklahoma, then having a tumultuous time with the Cleveland Browns, to now becoming the most clutch quarterback in the NFL.
That road has been exhausting, challenging, and rewarding at the same time. But throughout that process, he has always been himself. In his first few years with the Browns, he was termed as being ‘cocky’, selfish, and immature.
Now, especially after his battle of words with a Seattle Seahawks fan, the media have labeled him as being a ‘dawg’. The 30-year-old believes it is a result of the impact of winning.
Early on in my career it was ‘cocky, immature.’ Now it’s ‘moxie’ and ‘he’s a dog.’ Same sh** different day. As long as you play well, they change the narrative, but you’ve just gotta be yourself, and I’ve always been like that.
Baker Mayfield told reporters
As a follow-up, ESPN’s Jenna Laine asked if his growth in the game has influenced any change in his behavior. To this, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers star replied that he has been the same all throughout his career.
Baker Mayfield on changing perceptions of him: “Early on in my career it was ‘cocky, immature.’ Now it’s ‘moxie’ and ‘he’s a dog.’ Same sh— different day. Therefore, it is the media who have changed the narratives surrounding him in whichever way they please. Back then, when he was losing games with the Browns, Baker Mayfield was labeled as a brash young star.
Now, at an age when most players tend to mature, and along with the wins he has engineered, the narratives are favoring the star quarterback. He did not blame the media, though, just pointed out how it has been.
Baker Mayfield taunts jawing fans on social media
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won their 4th game of the season against the Seattle Seahawks. That also happens to be the 4th time they managed to win a close battle.

Even though there was no repeat of the 4th heroics from Baker Mayfield as has become the norm, he did what was necessary to keep the Bucs level with the home team in the 4th quarter.
More importantly, he kept his word to the Seahawks fan with whom he jawed before the game. After the dust settled on their win, the Texas native decided to put out a word of caution for any opposing fan thinking of jawing at him.
Name the time and place.

He cleverly posted a photo of himself standing with his teammates, including the Seahawks’ fan who decided it was wise to taunt him. This post seems to be a reminder that it is wild to think of taunting professional football players, particularly one who has the tools to alter a game.
Cowboys superfan Allen Iverson sees Baker Mayfield as a version of himself
Over the past few years, Baker Mayfield has delved into his spiritual side to help him battle through ‘bust’ claims and establish himself as a franchise quarterback.
Even though he has become a lot more spiritual, the star quarterback has not lost his ‘bite’. This attitude has helped him keep his mettle on the field, and that reminds NBA legend Allen Iverson of someone he knows all too well.
Baker is a dog. I love Baker. He plays every game like it’s his last, and I love everything about that.
Allen Iverson said on First Take

While saying this, First Take host Stephen A. Smith chimed in to say that Mayfield reminds Iverson of himself. To this, the Hall of Famer agreed. He then clarified that he loves the Buccaneers star despite being a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan.
