Asian Games silver medalist and hockey star Balbir Singh Jr passes away

Balbir Singh Jr passed away today in Chandigarh. He was a member of the Asian Games team in 1958 when India won silver and was the only namesake to play alongside the legendary Balbir Singh Sr. The latter passed away ten months ago.

Balbir Jr was born in Sansarpur and took to hockey at the age of six. He then went on to captain his university team and then joined the Indian Railways Team. He was then selected for the 1958 Asian Games held in Tokyo. He served as a back up to Balbir Singh Sr and also played together in a few matches. Tributes have started pouring in for the late hockey star following the news which was announced today.

Balbir Singh Jr’s daughter Mandeep Samra announced the news today saying, “My father breathed his last on Sunday morning and he passed away due to heart failure in his sleep. He took pride in representing India at the international level including the 1958 Asian Games and he would also share with us about his playing days along with Balbir Singh Senior sir.”

“We are touched by all the tributes and condolences coming from the hockey world and fans and my mother Sukhpal Kaur thanks all the well wishers. He was also an avid golfer and a tennis player and was a member of the Chandigarh Golf Club,” shared Mandeep Samra, daughter of Balbir Singh Junior.”

The loss of Balbir Singh Jr is being mourned now by the hockey fraternity as tributes continue to pour in.
