For sure, it was a bizarre moment when the ball during the second round match between Matteo Gigante and Gabriel Diallo on Wednesday (July 30) at the Canadian Open went through the net. This led to the chair umpire overturning his decision.
At a point during the match, both were engaged in a rally when Gigante decided to review a call. When Diallo returned the ball, instead of above the net, the ball travelled through it.

Diallo, the Canadian ace, went on to win the match with a 6-3, 7-6(5) scoreline. Before this match, Gigante knocked out Borna Coric. But 27th seed Diallo received a bye and kick-started his campaign in the second round against the Italian ace. Gigante was chasing his first title of his career in the tournament.
Diallo, on the other hand, has one singles title under his belt. He took home the Libema Open by beating Zizou Bergs last month. Diallo hasn’t yet lifted a title in the 500 or above category. He is also participating in doubles along with compatriot Alexis Galarneau. They will play their first match against the American pair of Frances Tiafoe and Alex Michelsen.
Gabriel Diallo to play Taylor Fritz in the third round of the Canadian Open
Gabriel Diallo has a tough challenge in front of him in the form of Taylor Fritz. The American ace scheduled the match against the 23-year-old after knocking out Roberto Carballes Baena.

Diallo, in the press conference after his opening round win, said he doesn’t care who he would play because both Fritz and Baena are challenging opponents. He has met the Spaniard in this year’s Hong Kong Open, which he won.
Yeah, like I said, I think the first rounds are never easy. So, very happy that I got through it, and now, you know, I’ve got two potential tricky opponents. Carballes Baena, that I played earlier this year, and we had a war in Hong Kong. I think it was 7-5 in the third, in conditions that are really similar here. Obviously, on the other hand, you have Taylor, who’s number four in the world, who I just played against in Wimbledon and produced arguably the best match that I’ve played.
Diallo took two sets off the 27-year-old in the second round of Wimbledon but couldn’t end the match in his favor, losing with a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(0), 4-6, 6-3 scoreline. Fritz went on to reach the semifinals only to lose in four sets to five-time Grand Slam champion and eventual runner-up Carlos Alcaraz.
So, I think regardless of the outcome, it’s going to be two challenging matches. But I’m really looking forward to the challenge. You know it’s what you practice for throughout the week, to, you know, get on center court and hopefully get a packed stadium and yeah, bunch of people coming to see you play and perform.
Gabriel Diallo added
While Diallo is chasing his career’s second title, Fritz is a 10-time champion in singles. This year, he has lifted two titles so far- both on grass courts. Fritz beat home favorite Alexander Zverev in the Stuttgart Open final and later lifted his career’s fourth Eastbourne International title.
He hasn’t yet won a Big Title since claiming the 2022 Indian Wells by defeating 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal. Last year, the World No.4 played his career’s first Grand Slam final at the US Open. But he couldn’t cross the final hurdle in the form of four-time Major champion Jannik Sinner. Later, he lost the ATP Finals championship clash to the Italian ace.
