In Short
  • A ball-tampering incident involving Lahore Qalandars has led to a five-run penalty during a PSL match against Karachi Kings.
  • Captain Shaheen Afridi and senior players Fakhar Zaman and Haris Rauf are under investigation for their roles in the controversy.
  • Afridi expressed frustration over the penalty but did not admit to any wrongdoing, while calls for bans on the involved players have emerged.

A major ball-tampering controversy has rocked the 2026 PSL season, involving defending champions Lahore Qalandars, in what could be one of league’s darkest moments. Qalandars’ captain Shaheen Afridi, along with senior players Fakhar Zaman and Haris Rauf, remain under scrutiny.

The incident occurred during Lahore Qalandars’ high-octane group-stage fixture against Karachi Kings, at the Gaddafi Stadium. Opting to bat first, LHQ could only post 128/9 on the board, with Abdullah Shafique top-scoring with 33 runs.

While it seemed like an easy chase, the tricky surface dragged the game down to the last over, with 14 runs required to win. Karachi were then placed at 115/5, with Azam Khan and Khushdil Shah at the crease.

As the fielding team gathered for a huddle at the top of Haris Rauf’s run-up, an incident was caught on camera. Fakhar Zaman, Shaheen Afridi, and Rauf, were spotted handling the ball in quick succession in a dubious manner. The exchange was noticed by umpire Faisal Afridi, who immediately asked to inspect the ball. For a while, he examined the condition of the ball, with square-leg umpire Sharfuddoula Saikat

The on-field umpires ruled that the condition of the ball had been deliberately altered, and slapped a 5-run penalty on Lahore, which led to the target dropping from 14 runs needed to just 9. The ball was replaced, despite Shaheen Afridi’s protests.

Ultimately, Karachi Kings secured a four-wicket victory, aided by a four and a six from Abbas Afridi in the last over. The ball-tampering incident has brought shame to the PSL, with the involved players currently under investigation.

While it marks another historic low for Pakistan cricket, LHQ skipper Afridi had a rather unusual reaction to the ball-tampering accusations. Rather than admitting guilt, the 25-year-old distanced himself from the act while expressing frustration over the penalty imposed. Even after being pressed by Ramiz Raja, he gave a non-committal answer, suggesting that his team would need to review the footage.

I don’t know about this, and we’ll see if it’s there in the camera and discuss what it is. Actually, five runs were taken and we can’t do anything.

Former Pakistan cricketers have even called for Afridi, Zaman and Rauf to be banned, from the PSL. The PCB disciplinary committee, headed by match referee Rohsan Mahanama, reported that Fakhar Zaman has denied all charges brought against him, with a meeting scheduled later this week.

Sikandar Raza’s makes revelation on PSL ball-tampering scandal involving Shaheen Afridi’s team

A part of Lahore Qalandars’ squad, all-rounder Sikandar Raza provided his own account of the ball-tampering controversy that erupted during the team’s PSL clash. Shaheen Afridi, Fakhar Zaman, and Haris Rauf face accusations of attempting to influence the outcome.

The Qalandars have been accused of altering the condition of the ball before the start of the final over of Kings’ chase. As a result, LHQ were handed a five-run penalty, which reduced the target from 129 to 124. While the senior players were not available to speak at the post-match presser, Sikandar Raza addressed the media, providing his own version of the incident to indicate that he was not involved in tampering.

He revealed that the two on-field umpires directed the players to stand their ground, while they spoke with the third umpire. Noting that he would only speak about his actions, the veteran Zimbabwean all-rounder exclaimed that there was no intent, at least from his part, to tamper the ball, and that he was only barred from rubbing the ball on his shirt because of the excessive dew near the boundary line.

Umpires asked us to remain at our fielding positions so only they can give you the exact answers to what happened… I can only speak for myself, there was never an attempt from my side to change the condition of the ball.

Raza further stated that he was not named among the perpetrators, and was not summoned by the investigative committee for questioning. Fakhar Zaman has been reportedly held accountable, and is at the risk of facing a lengthy two or three match ban.
