- Bam Adebayo scored 83 points in a game against the Washington Wizards, marking a historic achievement in his NBA career.
- His performance has led to increased respect from opponents regarding his offensive capabilities.
- Adebayo expressed pride in his scoring feat, stating it has shifted perceptions of him as a two-way player.
It has been three weeks now since Bam Adebayo had the biggest night of his NBA career. It was a historic night as Adebayo scored 83 points as the Miami Heat took out the Washington Wizards. His performance has been one of the biggest talking points of the 2025-26 campaign.
In an interview with Rohan Nadkarni of NBC News, the three-time All-Star reflected on his 83-point game at the Kaseya Center and how it changed the way opposing teams look at him now.
Now when I step on the court it’s like yeah you have to guard me now because I can make 7 3s in a game. I can get to the foul line… I think it’s a different level of respect for my offensive game for sure. Some of the greatest players in our league has come through and not be able to do that. So too score 83 in a game is a big deal. I think it’s changed how people view my offensive game.

Bam Adebayo has never been regarded as an elite scorer in the NBA. Since being drafted by the Heat as the 14th pick in the 2017 NBA draft, Adebayo has averaged over 20 points per game in a season just once in his career, and it was in the 2022-23 season.
Hence, no one would have expected the 28-year-old to stun the NBA world and be the one to pass Kobe Bryant for the second-most points scored in a single game. However, the NBA community was split despite the historic performance.
Some were not impressed with the manner in which he got to 83 points, while some downplayed it because it came against a poor Wizards side. But some did come in support of Adebayo and appreciated him for his remarkable feat.
The Heat center is currently averaging 20.3 points, 10 rebounds, and three assists this season. He may not be an elite scorer like a Luka Doncic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and others, but Adebayo feels like opposing teams defend and approach him differently since his record-breaking night.
Bam Adebayo on whether he would trade his 83 points for a Defensive Player of the Year award
While he was not known for his offensive skillset, Bam Adebayo has always been regarded as an elite defender in the paint. Since 2020, Adebayo has been selected in the All-Defensive First Team once and in the All-Defensive Second Team four times, highlighting his defensive prowess. However, he has yet to win a Defensive Player of the Year award.

When asked if he would trade his 83-point night for a DPOY award, Adebayo said:
I don’t know if I could at this point. That was a special brand of basketball to me. Obviously that looks different to everybody else but 83 points in a game has shifted everybody mindset to how they look at me play now. It’s like ‘oh he defends but he’s really a two way guy.’ To me that 83 when you see that, It sounds ridiculous. It shocked people.

Adebayo’s performance came out of nowhere relative to his career norms. Prior to his historic night, the most points he had scored in an NBA game were 41 points. But despite the criticism, he has cemented his name in the history books.
Bam Adebayo lauds the work Jayson Tatum has put in to get back this season
It has been nearly a month since Jayson Tatum made his return to the court after a ten-month hiatus due to an Achilles tendon tear. It has been a long but remarkable recovery for the 28-year-old. While Tatum has looked impressive in moments, he has not reached his top condition yet.
Following the Boston Celtics’ win over the Heat on Wednesday night, Bam Adebayo spoke about Tatum and applauded the work he has put in to get back this season. The two stars were a part of the same draft class in 2017.
I can tell he’s still out of shape but when you consider somebody like that your brother — we’ve known each other since we were like 12. You see what he’s gone through…you’re proud of him for pushing through it…you tip your hat off to somebody who’s been through that and still try to play.
