Czech Republican Barbora Krejcikova stunned the tennis fraternity as she pulled off a massive upset by defeating Italian Jasmine Paolini in the 2024 Wimbledon women’s singles final to lift her maiden title at the All-England Club. Krejcikova beat Paolini in three sets of 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 on Saturday to clinch her second singles Grand Slam title.
The Czech Republican, despite being the 31st seed beat Paolini, the seventh seed without breaking much sweat. Krejcikova started the match at the Centre Court against Paolini who has been on a stellar run in the 2024 season. However, the 28-year-old defied all the odds and defeated her opponent in two hours (1 hour and 56 minutes to be precise).
In a battle of first-timers, Barbora Krejcikova showed nerves of steel and brought all her experience to the fore. The Czech Republican delivered a first set of near-transcendent perfection and declared that she was here to take nothing less than the crown.
Barbora Krejcikova dominates Jasmine Paolini like no one imagined
Contrary to all beliefs and predictions, Barbora Krejcikova dominated Jasmine Paolini as no one imagined. The 28-year-old was nearly flawless in the first set but was instantly pushed to the brink in the second set when Paolini came roaring back, clinching it 6-2.
This meant the scores were level and the game now hinged on the result of the third and decider set. Everyone anticipated that Krejcikova would feel the heat and might crumble under pressure. But as she has done throughout the tournament, the Czech proved everyone wrong.
Krejcikova not only held her nerves but went on to win crucial points and denied Paolini a chance to make a comeback into the game. The 31st seed clinched the decider 6-4 and was crowned the new Ladies’ Singles champion.
Already a ten-time Grand Slam champion in doubles, Krejcikova now has two singles Grand Slam titles- a French Open title and a Wimbledon title. She is on the same path her mentor and late coach Jana Novotna, the 1998 Wimbledon ladies’ singles champion would have wanted her to be on.
