Barbora Krejcikova is the only WTA player in the Top 40 that’s yet to play a match this season. The Wimbledon champion has been away from the court for the past four months since suffering a back injury. She has finally revealed that she doesn’t know when she will return to the court following her withdrawal from the Indian Wells and Miami Open.

Krejcikova made a name for herself at the 2024 Wimbledon Championship, where she produced some brilliant tennis to win the title. Before then the Czech Republic star had won her only singles Grand Slam at the 2021 French Open. However, Krejcikova was in-and-out for the majority of last season due to injuries.

The two-time major champion last played a competitive match at the WTA Finals in November. The 29-year-old initially hurt her back during the Asian swing in October and though she didn’t fully recover, she had to push herself to play at the WTA Finals in Riyadh. She missed the first Slam of the season, the Australian Open, due to the injury.

She recently announced that she won’t be competing at the Indian Wells and Miami Open, which leaves her return to the court hanging. In an interview, she opened up about her back injury recovery and added she would continue playing with pains.

Recovery is not as fast as I expected, that’s true, but I am doing everything possible to return as soon as possible. I wonder if I will ever be completely free of pain again, right now it is a situation that stresses me quite a bit.

The World No.16 will hope to return before the Wimbledon Championship and be able to defend her points. However, she’s yet to give a specific date or period she’s looking to be back on the court as she continues recuperating.

Barbora Krejcikova says transitioning from grass to clay last year was “one of the most challenging tasks”

Barbora Krejcikova was never consistently among the WTA elites or the Top 10 in the WTA rankings. She always knew how to find those moments within each calendar to reach her peak performance and expand her impressive list of achievements. And she did that last year by winning the Wimbledon Championship.

However, she revealed that one of the causes of her injury was the change of surface from grass to clay for the Paris Olympics. The Czech Republic star had just won the Wimbledon title and transitioning immediately to clay for the Olympics didn’t work well for her body.

It was during the summer when everything started to go wrong, transitioning from grass to clay is one of the most challenging tasks, and we had very little time to do it.. I remember that the first day it rained, on the second, there was heat, and I played in the afternoon with the hottest weather, as well as long matches. I noticed this the next day when my strength quickly began to diminish. After the first match, my head was spinning and I had cramps, I didn’t feel well at all.

Players have often complained about the difficulty of transitioning to a different surface immediately which could cause injuries. Perhaps that’s why most Top players choose tournaments they play in, which gives them time to smoothly transition.
