Katerina Siniakova and Tomas Machac, who recently split as a couple, won the mixed doubles tennis gold medal at the 2024 Olympics. They represented the Czech Republic and defeated Zhang Zhizhen and Wang Xinyu with scores of 6-2, 5-7, and 10-8 in a match tiebreaker on Friday (August 2) night.

However, the result didn’t go down well for some fans, who blamed Siniakova’s doubles partner at the Games, Barbora Krejcikova, for being a ‘bad luck’ to her. However, the current Wimbledon champion quickly reminded that fan on X about the achievements they have had as a doubles pair.

Siniakova is known for her success in doubles. She has won nine Grand Slam titles in total, the first seven of which were with Krejcikova.

After they stopped partnering at the end of 2023, Siniakova won the French Open with Coco Gauff in June and Wimbledon with Taylor Townsend in July. Roland Garros seemed to become a happy hunting ground for Siniakova as it is the same venue used for the Olympics.

However, Krejcikova and Siniakova reunited in the doubles at the 2024 Prague Open and eventually the Paris Games. They lost in the quarterfinal to the Russian duo of Diana Shnaider and Mirra Andreeva.

Tomas Machac and Katerina Siniakova make history for Czech Republic at the Paris Olympics

Czechs Katerina Siniakova and Tomas Machac won gold in the mixed doubles final at the Summer Olympics in Paris. This is the first gold medal for the Czech Republic in Paris this year. It is also Siniakova’s second Olympic gold, having won the women’s doubles in Tokyo 2020 with Barbora Krejcikova.

Wang and Zhang were very close to winning. They led 8-6 in the match tie-break before Siniakova and Machac won four points in a row to take the gold. The Chinese pair made 31 unforced errors but hit 25 winners. They showed high-risk, high-reward tennis to come back after losing the first set.

In the tournament, Siniakova and Machac had impressive victories. They defeated the top seeds Lara Siegemund and Alexander Zverev in the first round. They also beat Ena Shibahara and Kei Nishikori of Japan and then Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Felix Auger-Aliassime to reach the final.

Wang and Zhang had a tough path to the final. They narrowly beat Brazil’s Luisa Stefani and Thiago Seyboth Wild. They also defeated the No. 2 seeds, Ellen Perez and Matthew Ebden, in a close match. In the semi-finals, they overcame the Dutch duo Demi Schuurs and Koolhof Wesley in another hard-fought match.
