Barbora Krejcikova reached her first Wimbledon singles final and won it! On the Centre Court in front of celebrities from across different fields, Krejcikova took an hour and 56 minutes to beat Italy’s seventh seed Jasmine Paolini in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to win her maiden Wimbledon trophy on Saturday (July 13).
Krejcikova is now a two-time Grand Slam singles champion. In 2021, she became the French Open champion by beating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in three sets. An ecstatic and emotional Krejcikova in her speech after the match said she was not ready to believe she was living the best day of her tennis career.
I think nobody really believes it. Nobody believes that I got to the final. And nobody’s going to believe that I won Wimbledon.Barbora Krejcikova said after the match
Krejcikova did not forget to dedicate her Wimbledon trophy to the person who believed she could one day win the Grand Slam title. She paid an emotional tribute to her childhood mentor Jana Novotna.
She was the one who told me I had the potential and I should definitely turn pro. Before she passed away she told me I could win a Slam.Barbora Krejcikova said
Before beating Paolini, Krejcikova knocked out 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in three sets. Following the win, Krejcikova will return to the Top 10.
Jasmine Paolini vows she won’t be heavily disappointed
Jasmine Paolini missed another opportunity to win her maiden Grand Slam title. Had she beaten Barbora Krejcikova, she would have become the first Italian, male or female, to win a Wimbledon title.
I'm a little bit sad, but I try to keep smiling. I have to remember today is still a good day.Jasmine Paolini said after the match
In the last month itself, the Italian advanced to her first Grand Slam final at the Roland Garros but faced the daunting task of beating Iga Swiatek which she couldn’t do. The Pole, winning in just straight sets, became the champion in Paris for the fourth time (third consecutive title). Then a day later, Paolini lost the doubles title along with partner Sara Errani to Coco Gauff and Katerina Siniakova.
The tennis fraternity has already started thinking of Paolini as a US Open favorite even though her best performance in that event came in 2021 and 2023 when she reached the first round.
