Barca presidential candidate Font not ready to see Koeman as manager under his watch

Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font has told that if he is elected, Ronald Koeman will no longer be the club’s manager. The Dutchman will not be the manager even if he wins a treble.

Font is running against the current Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu. Bartomeu is under fire after Barca’s two-year trophyless run culminated in a humiliating 8-2 defeat against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarters. The last week’s loss has already seen plenty of fallout.

Manager Quique Setien and technical manager Eric Abidal is already departing. But Bartomeu is still refusing to step down before the presidential elections in March 2021.

Bartomeu has selected former Barca star Koeman as the Barca’s new gaffer. But Font has made it clear that he will not have Koeman as head coach under his charge.

“If I am president, Koeman will not be the coach,” Font told Cadena SER. “Koeman is a legend of Barcelona. We have to thank him very much that with the complexity that exists today in the club, and in the dressing room, and with the decisions that have to be made, he has taken on the challenge.”

Font prefers Xavi as Barca Manager

Font has made his preference for Barca’s next manager in club legend Xavi Hernandez. The Barca icon is currently at the helm of Qatari-club Al Sadd.

“Xavi understands that all the pieces of the club have to fit together,” Font said. “A board of directors that lets whoever leads the sports project do his work, which in our case would be him.”

The future of Barca star Lionel Messi is under question after a trophyless season. Multiple reports stating that the Argentine star wants to leave Barcelona.

On Tuesday, Bartomeu insisted that Messi would stay. Font expects that Messi’s future will have no problem if he is playing under former team-mate Xavi.

“Messi is completely disappointed because of the critical situation at the club both in sports, and in economic and organisational terms. I expect that Messi will play under Xavi in 2021.”
