Former Barcelona and Liverpool player Javier Mascherano retires from football today. He announced his retirement today to reporters. He finished his career at Argentinian team Estudiantes which is considered to be a successful team. In its 115 year history, it has spent most of its time in the Argentina Primera Division, which is the most prominent league.
Famous at both Barcelona and Liverpool
Javier Mascherano started his career at River Plate and moved to Corinthians in 2005. A move to the Premier League beckoned to him as he completed a transfer to West Ham in 2006. Liverpool signed him up in 2007 and he went till the finals of the Champions League in the same season. After Rafael Benitez left Liverpool in 2010, Mascherano felt that it was time for him to leave. Luckily Barcelona came calling due to his performances and he signed for them. After 8 years there where he won 4 La Liga titles and 2 Champions League titles, he left the Catalans to go back to Argentina.
He joined Estudiantes and played there for the last two years. Now he retires with a rich pedigree and as a loyal servant to Barcelona and the Argentina team. He has made 147 appearances for Argentina, which makes him the longest serving player. Javier Zanetti (143 appearances) and Lionel Messi (141 appearances) trail behind him in Argentina’s most capped list.
